hi...
this is for those of you who want to get dvds on your ipod, and who operate on a windows or linux system.
first of all, you will need to use more software than it takes to use on the mac operating system, as handbrake was set up for macs. but dont worry, it still works just as well.
1. first you need to go to http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-DVD-Decrypter.htm (just past this link into the url) and download the free dvd software there. there is big button that says download. (all of the stuff you need is free, just so u know)
2. once you have downloaded that to your desktop, go to http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=tivo-mplayer&filena
me=HandBrake-0.7.0-GUIAndCLI-20060115.zip&use_mirror=easynews (again just plug this into your url, but this link downloads it automatically)
3. once both pieces of software have finised downloading, put your dvd in to the dvd drive and open up the dvd decrypter (first download).
4. the dvd decryter will seach for you dvd which may take about a minute.
5. then go to 'mode' on the top of the screen and select 'IFO I'
6. Click the Tools menu, select Settings, and then choose the IFO Mode tab.
In the Options section, click the File Splitting field and set it to None. Click OK to exit the Settings dialog.
7.In the right-hand section of the interface, click the Stream Processing tab and check the Enable Stream Processing box.
8.Immediately below that box, uncheck everything except for the first video and audio items. In other words, only two boxes should be selected.
Back on the left side, in the Destination section, click the folder icon to determine where DVD Decrypter should place your ripped files. (I'm usually in favor of something like My Documents > My Videos > Movie Title.)
Finally, click Decrypt and be prepared to wait 20 minutes or so while the software does its thing.
HANDBRAKE
1) put the dvd that you want on your ipod into your dvd drive, then open up handbrake.
2) Then in the 'source' section, select browse go to 'my computer'. click on the dvd drive. two folders will come up. select the VIDEO_TS folder, then click ok.
3) handbrake will scan the dvd for a minute, do not be alarmed! it will take one minute tops
4) once it is done, click browse under destination, then select wherever you want your dvd to end up. i recommend making a folder to save all your dvds into, perhaps on your desktop.
5) then click the button on the top right hand corner that says show presents. if you have an itouch or an iphone click iphone/ ipod touch. if you have any other ipod, such as a video or one of the fat little nano thingys, click ipod high rez.
6) then click 'encode video' and the process will start
depending on the length of your movie, the encoding will take between one and five hours. be patient, its worth it
GETTING IT INTO ITUNES
1) close handbrake and eject your disk.
2) plug in your ipod and fire up itunes
3) click file, then import at the top of the itunes screen
4) go to where you chose your dvd file to be saved as its destination.
5) press select, and the video will import. it will take about a minute or two
6) click file, then sync ipod, and your movie will be put on your ipod... this again takes about two minutes with the miracles of modern day itunes syncing...
CONGRATS!!! YOUR TASK IS COMPLETE! now repeat this process to your hearts content!
happy viewing.....
the instructions for the mac are on my 'handbrake for mac's page'
